The name Jesus was given to the Holy Child at God’s command (Luke 1:31). The Holy Name is allpowerful because of the Person who bears it; we honor it because of the command of Christ, that we should pray in His Name and because it reminds us of all the blessings we receive through our Holy Redeemer. Hence St. Paul was able to write to the Philippians: “. . . at the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth” (Phil. 2:10). By means of this devotion we also make amends for improper use of the Holy Name.

INVOCATION

Blessed be the most holy Name of Jesus without end!

HYMN IN HONOR OF THE HOLY NAME

Jesus, the very thought of You
       With sweetness fills the breast!
Yet sweeter far Your face to see
       And in Your presence rest.
No voice can sing, no heart can frame,
       Nor can the memory find,
A sweeter sound than Jesus’ name,
       The Savior of mankind.
O hope of every contrite heart!
O joy of all the meek!
To those who fall, how kind You are!
How good to those who seek!
But what to those who find? Ah! this
Nor tongue nor pen can show –
The love of Jesus, what it is,
None but His loved ones know.
Jesus! our only hope is You,
       As You our prize shall be;
In You be all our glory now,
       And through eternity. Amen.

ROMAN BREVIARY

Indulgence of 5 years; plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, for daily and devout recitation of this hymn.

PRAYER OF PETITION

O Divine Jesus, You have promised that anything we ask of the Eternal Father in Your name shall be granted.

O Eternal Father. In the name of Jesus, for the love of Jesus, in fulfillment of this promise, and because Jesus has said it, grant us our petitions for the sake of Jesus, Your Divine Son. Amen.

ACT OF REPARATION FOR BLASPHEMIES UTTERED AGAINST THE HOLY NAME

O Jesus, my Savior and Redeemer, Son of the living God, behold, we kneel before You and offer You our reparation; we would make amends for all the blasphemies uttered against Your holy name, for all the injuries done to You in the Blessed Sacrament, for all the irreverence shown toward Your immaculate Virgin Mother, for all the calumnies and slanders spoken against Your spouse, the holy Catholic and Roman Church. O Jesus, who has said: “If you ask the Father anything in My name, He will give it to you,” we pray and beseech Thee for all our brethren who are in danger of sin; shield them from every temptation to fall away from the true faith; save those who are even now standing on the brink of the abyss; to all of them give light and knowledge of the truth, courage and strength for the conflict with evil, perseverance in faith and active charity! For this do we pray, most merciful Jesus, in Your name, unto God the Father, who lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.

Indulgence of 500 days once a day; plenary indulgence once a day; plenary indulgence of 500 days once a day; plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, when this prayer has been said devoutly every day.
